General Motors Says It Is Not Backing Down from Electric Trucks

Have General Motors’ electric ambitions started to fade? That question has been making waves across the industry after reports claimed the company had paused development of its next-generation electric trucks. With declining sales of models like the Hummer EV and Silverado EV raising eyebrows, GM stepped in with a clear and confident response: electrification is still the end game.

The company didn’t leave much room for doubt, firmly denying any cancellations and confirming that its overall strategy remains intact, even as it navigates challenges surrounding its Ultium platform.

Temporary setback or deeper trouble

The story gained traction after a report by Crain’s Detroit Business suggested GM had informed suppliers about an indefinite delay in developing upcoming electric trucks. The timing made the news even more striking, especially with anticipation building around future models like the Silverado EV and Sierra EV, expected to arrive by 2028.

GM quickly responded, emphasizing that nothing has been canceled and that its electric truck and SUV lineup remains a core part of its long-term vision.

Sales figures raise questions

Still, the numbers tell part of the story. In the first quarter of 2026, several of GM’s large electric models saw noticeable declines. Silverado EV dropped by 41%, Escalade IQ by 26.8%, and Hummer EV saw the steepest fall at over 52%. Sierra EV managed slight growth, but overall, the segment is clearly under pressure.

This slowdown can be linked to a mix of factors, including the expiration of some federal incentives and a growing consumer shift toward hybrids as a more flexible alternative.

Strategy shift Rescheduling not cancellation

While GM insists nothing has been canceled, a more realistic reading suggests the company may be adjusting its timeline. After all, the Ultium platform represents a massive investment, and stepping back to reassess market readiness, infrastructure, and demand makes business sense.

Importantly, current electric trucks like the Silverado EV and Sierra EV are still very much available, continuing to represent GM’s push into high-performance, tech-driven electric vehicles.

ArabGT Take

GM seems to be playing the long game here. Yes, the current numbers may not match the ambitious expectations set a few years ago, but stepping away from electric trucks now would mean giving ground to rivals like Tesla with the Cybertruck and Ford with the F-150 Lightning.

The direction is clear electric is the future. The only question is how fast the market can realistically get there.
