Ford Mustang sales in 2024 marked a significant downturn, with the iconic muscle car experiencing its worst year in six decades. Only 44,003 units were sold, a stark contrast to its storied legacy. Adding to the challenge, the electric Mustang Mach-E, often dismissed by traditional Mustang enthusiasts, outperformed the classic Mustang by more than 7,000 units in sales.
This decline in Ford Mustang sales is not a new trend. Over the years, the numbers have been steadily dropping, with a brief recovery in 2023. Previously, the lowest sales were recorded in 2022, with 47,566 units. The downturn was most dramatic in the fourth quarter of 2024, with sales plummeting 43.4 percent compared to the same period in 2023, resulting in only 7,518 units sold. These figures are alarmingly close to the Chevrolet Camaro’s final sales performance before its discontinuation.
Meanwhile, the Ford Mustang Mach-E continues to gain traction. The electric crossover closed 2024 with 51,745 units sold, bolstered by a strong fourth-quarter performance of 16,119 sales—a year-over-year increase of 35.6 percent. Ford’s competitive pricing and promotional incentives have undoubtedly contributed to the Mach-E’s growing success, even amid slowing demand for electric vehicles.
Looking ahead, pricing adjustments for 2025 models might influence Ford Mustang sales. The 2025 Mustang Mach-E starts at $38,490 for the rear-wheel-drive Select model. The gasoline-powered Mustang EcoBoost holds steady at $33,515, while the Mustang GT has increased by $2,600, now starting at $47,055.
Ford has yet to address the sharp decline in Ford Mustang sales, leaving questions about whether supply chain or production issues played a role. As the last American muscle car in its segment after the discontinuation of the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger, the Mustang’s 2025 performance will be a critical test of its ability to regain momentum.
