Ford is starting 2026 under familiar pressure, with recalls once again becoming a major talking point for the American automaker.
After setting an unwanted industry record last year with 153 recalls affecting nearly 13 million vehicles, Ford is already facing another difficult year. So far in 2026, the Blue Oval has issued 34 recall campaigns covering 9,812,890 vehicles, in addition to a separate recall involving 2,633 engine block heaters.
The biggest recall this year affects around 4.4 million trucks, including the best-selling Ford F-Series. The issue is linked to a software problem that could cause the brake lights and turn signals on a connected trailer to stop working. For owners who regularly tow, this is more than just an inconvenience, as trailer lighting is essential for safety on the road. Ford plans to solve the problem through an over-the-air software update.
Recalls have followed Ford closely over the past several years. The company led the industry in recalls during both 2022 and 2023, while also dealing with billions of dollars in warranty-related costs. These numbers have placed extra pressure on Ford’s quality control efforts and raised questions about how quickly the company can improve reliability across its lineup.
The issue also caught the attention of regulators. In late 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fined Ford for failing to meet federal recall requirements. As part of a three-year consent order, Ford agreed to improve its recall process and meet regularly with the agency.
Ford, however, says the rise in recalls is not only a sign of problems, but also part of a more aggressive strategy to find and fix issues faster. The company says it has more than doubled its safety and technical expert teams and increased testing on critical vehicle systems, including powertrains.
Still, the numbers are hard to ignore. Ford may be working to move faster and be more transparent with customers, but nearly 10 million recalled vehicles in just a few months shows that quality control remains one of the biggest challenges facing the brand in 2026.
