Ford is celebrating a big moment in the history of the Expedition. For 2027, the full-size SUV reaches its 30th anniversary, and the brand decided to mark the occasion with a special appearance package that gives this long-running family hauler a more exclusive identity.
The Expedition first arrived for the 1997 model year, back when large SUVs were beginning to shift from purely practical machines into more comfortable, family-focused vehicles. Over the years, it has grown into one of Ford’s most important models in this segment, and now the company is using this anniversary edition to remind everyone just how far the Expedition has come.
The first thing that grabs attention is the color. Ford gave this special version Blue Ember metallic tri-coat, a striking shade that was previously reserved for the Mustang Dark Horse. It is not a color you would normally expect to see on a large three-row SUV, and that is exactly what makes it work. It gives the Expedition a more special presence and helps it stand out in a class where many rivals tend to play it safe.
The look is completed by 22-inch wheels finished in high-gloss ebony, adding a darker and more premium character. Under the hood, there are no surprises, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. The anniversary model comes with Ford’s twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 producing 400 horsepower, along with all-wheel drive as standard. In the wider Expedition lineup, Ford still offers a stronger version of the same engine with up to 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque on certain variants, all paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
This special edition arrives as part of the fifth-generation Expedition, which was introduced recently. While the exterior changes for the latest generation were more evolutionary than dramatic, the cabin received a much more noticeable overhaul. There is also real history behind this celebration. Ford says it has sold nearly 3 million Expeditions since the SUV first entered production, which is a strong reminder of how important this model has been for the brand. It may not dominate the full-size SUV world in the same way some GM rivals do, but the Expedition has absolutely earned its place as one of the key names in the segment.
