Few cars in the automotive world carry the legacy of the Volkswagen Golf. For decades, it has been one of the most recognizable hatchbacks on the road — practical, simple, and quietly iconic. Now, Volkswagen has released the first teaser image of the all-new Golf 9, giving us an early glimpse at what the next chapter of this legendary model might look like.
The preview image was shown during a company meeting in Wolfsburg, Germany, and although it doesn’t reveal much detail, it already hints at some important changes — especially inside the cabin.
The Golf DNA Isn’t Going Anywhere
Volkswagen seems determined not to mess with a winning formula. According to design chief Andreas Mindt, the new Golf will stay faithful to the styling cues that made previous generations so successful.
Rather than reinventing the car completely, the ninth generation will evolve the design we saw in Golf 7 and Golf 8, refining the look while keeping the familiar silhouette that millions of drivers around the world recognize instantly.
Electric Future — Without Abandoning Gasoline
Volkswagen is also taking a more balanced approach to electrification this time.
Instead of separating electric models into completely different families like the ID series, the company plans to introduce an electric Golf — likely called ID. Golf — around 2028. This version will replace the ID.3 while keeping the Golf’s recognizable design.
At the same time, the gasoline-powered Golf 8 isn’t going anywhere just yet. It will remain in production for several more years and is expected to receive a major facelift so it visually aligns with the upcoming generation.
Real Buttons Are Coming Back
Perhaps the most interesting change will be inside the car.
Volkswagen appears to have listened to customer feedback after years of criticism about touch controls. The next Golf will bring back physical buttons on the steering wheel and center console, making everyday functions easier to use while driving.
There’s also a fun nostalgic touch in development. Volkswagen is planning a Retro Mode for the digital displays that recreates the look of the original Golf Mk1 instruments, giving drivers a visual reminder of where the story began.
What Happens Before Golf 9 Arrives
Before the next Golf officially arrives, Volkswagen’s electric lineup will continue to grow.
The production version of the ID. Polo is expected to debut in April 2026, followed by the small ID. Every1 city car in 2027 — a model that could eventually replace the Up!.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen is preparing to move combustion-powered Golf production to Mexico starting in 2027, ensuring the model remains available globally.
A Smart Move From Volkswagen
In many ways, Volkswagen seems to have realized something important: the Golf became famous because of its simplicity, usability, and recognizable identity.
Bringing back physical buttons and preserving the Golf name instead of replacing it with another “ID” badge could be exactly what longtime fans were hoping for.
