Elon Musk’s Fortune Surpasses $1 Trillion For The First Time

SpaceX’s long-awaited arrival on Nasdaq turned into a defining moment for Wall Street. The company’s IPO became the largest public offering in history, pushing Elon Musk’s net worth beyond $1 trillion and making him the first trillionaire in modern history.

Shares opened at $150, instantly valuing Musk’s stake in SpaceX at more than $766 billion. Investor demand was strong from the start, sending the stock as high as $176 within the first two hours before it closed at $160.95. Even with that late pullback, SpaceX still finished about 19% above its expected IPO price of $135.

The debut quickly became the financial story of the day, taking over market headlines and even lighting up massive screens in Times Square. For many investors, SpaceX is not just another tech giant. It represents a bet on the future of space exploration, satellite networks, and artificial intelligence.

The Real Test Starts Now

The first-day excitement was huge, but analysts say the bigger challenge begins after the hype settles. Mergermarket analyst Samuel Kerr expected the stock to trade at least 20% above its projected valuation, while noting that the key question is whether SpaceX can hold that value in the months and years ahead.

Trading data also suggested that some investors sold shares in major tech companies to buy into SpaceX. Tesla, Microsoft, Apple, and Amazon dipped slightly during Friday’s session, while Meta, Alphabet, and Nvidia stayed mostly stable.

With its market debut, SpaceX instantly became one of the five most valuable companies in the world, attracting major institutional investors and large funds. Wall Street banks also benefited heavily, with IPO fees reportedly reaching around $500 million, led by Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley.

Musk’s Trillion Dollar Moment

For Musk, whose Tesla stake is estimated at around $280 billion, the SpaceX IPO pushed his total fortune to nearly $1.05 trillion. But Musk has often said his focus is not personal luxury. His long-term mission remains expanding humanity beyond Earth, from permanent lunar bases to a self-sustaining city on Mars.

SpaceX already launches most payloads reaching orbit and has transformed the industry with its reusable Falcon 9 rockets, which have achieved success rates above 99%. And while Musk now stands far ahead of every other billionaire, he continues to frame his wealth as fuel for bigger goals tied to Earth, space, and Mars.

Who Comes Next?

Musk’s trillion-dollar milestone naturally raises the next question: who could follow him?

Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index places Google co-founder Larry Page at around $304 billion, followed by Sergey Brin at roughly $283 billion. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos stands near $262 billion, while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg are also often mentioned as possible future contenders.

For now, though, no one is close to even half of Musk’s reported fortune. The race to become the world’s second trillionaire is open, but it is still a very long road.
