The all-new Electric Charger is the “best and fastest muscle car” in the eyes of the CEO of the American-owned Dodge company.
If you walk into your local Dodge dealership showroom, you’ll likely notice a few Chargers and Challengers left on display. Production of these models may have ended last December, but the abundance of inventory left is no coincidence. The American automaker has been working with its dealers to ensure they have the product ready for the next-generation Dodge Charger, which is the first electric muscle car!
The American brand plans to have fewer than 2,000 new Chargers and Challengers of the old model when the all-new Charger Daytona EV goes on sale later this year, according to the new CEO of the Dodge brand, Matt McAlear, who announced the news earlier this month.
Dodge will start building the coupe models; The new Charger Daytona R/T and Charger Daytona Scat Pack will arrive sometime this summer, a decision he said was made long before he took office on June 1. A few years ago, automakers went all-out with their electrification plans, setting ambitious timelines for transitioning their lineups to battery power.
Dodge president McAleer told the press that the company had gone all-out in their efforts. Although he expressed excitement about the vehicle being electric, he emphasized that they did not intend to market it as just another electric vehicle. He further explained that Dodge’s goal wasn’t to create a car with the best drag coefficient or range, but rather to build the best muscle car.
Specifications of the electric Charger:
The Charger Daytona R/T gets its power from two electric motors, one in the front and the other in the rear, with a combined power of 496 horsepower and a torque of 548 Newton meters. The all-wheel drive car can accelerate from a standstill to a speed of 96 km/h in 4.7 seconds, and cover the quarter mile in 13.1 seconds, while its top speed reaches 220 km/h, and this electric car will be able to travel a distance of up to 510 km on a single charge.
The new Charger Daytona Scat Pack is powered by two electric motors that together produce 670 horsepower and 850 Nm of torque, enabling the all-wheel-drive car to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds, cover the quarter mile in 11.5 seconds, and reach a top speed of 130 mph. The electric car will be able to travel up to 250 miles on a single charge.
Dodge has already announced a more powerful Banshee version of the Charger EV, but there remains uncertainty about whether die-hard SRT enthusiasts are ready to transition from gasoline to electric vehicles. McAleer acknowledged that while some customers are ready, others are not, noting that the shift to electric cars doesn’t happen overnight.
