China to End the Era of Hidden Door Handles Starting 2027

For years, hidden door handles have been marketed as a symbol of the future—clean, minimalist, and undeniably modern. But China has now decided that when it comes to safety, function must come before form.

Starting in 2027, China will officially ban “hidden” car door handles, becoming the first country to draw a hard line against a design trend made famous by Tesla Inc and later adopted by several Chinese manufacturers, including Xiaomi Corp.

At first glance, flush or retractable handles seem harmless. They rely on key fobs, smartphones, or a gentle press to pop out—technology designed to look seamless and futuristic. But regulators say that in moments where seconds matter most, these systems can become obstacles rather than conveniences.

Concerns have been growing on both sides of the Pacific. In the United States, auto safety officials opened an investigation last year into emergency door release mechanisms on the Tesla Model 3, questioning whether occupants or first responders could easily access the car after a crash. Tesla did not publicly comment on the probe and has yet to respond to the latest policy shift in China.

Chinese authorities, however, are moving decisively. Under new safety requirements issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, every vehicle sold in the country must feature clearly defined exterior and interior door handles. Crucially, mechanical release systems will no longer be optional—they will be mandatory. Electronic handles may still exist, but only as secondary solutions, not the sole means of entry or exit.

The rules go further than that. They define exactly where exterior handles must be placed and how they should operate, ensuring doors can be opened even if a vehicle loses power after an accident. Inside the cabin, handles must be obvious, visible, and instantly recognizable—no guessing, no searching, no delay.

New vehicle models will need to meet these standards starting January 1, 2027, while existing approved models will be given time to adapt, with full compliance required by January 1, 2029.

The issue gained tragic urgency last year when Chinese state media reported a fatal accident involving a Xiaomi SU7 Ultra. According to the report, bystanders were unable to open the doors of the burning vehicle in time to rescue the driver. Xiaomi has not publicly commented on the incident.

China’s message is now clear: innovation is welcome, but not at the cost of human life. In an era obsessed with futuristic design, the simplest mechanical solution—one that works every time, without power or screens—may once again prove to be the most important.
