Since the launch of the mid-engine Corvette C8 in 2019, enthusiasts have continued to hope that Chevrolet might eventually bring back the manual gearbox, preserving the traditional three-pedal driving experience that has long been part of the car’s identity.
That hope has now been put to rest, as the company confirmed there are no current or future plans to reintroduce a manual transmission to the Corvette lineup. The statement came during a discussion held on the sidelines of the 12 Hours of Sebring, where Executive Chief Engineer Tony Roma made it clear that the position has not changed.

The decision reflects more than just a shift in engineering priorities. Toward the end of the previous-generation Corvette C7, demand for manual transmissions had already declined significantly, indicating that buyers themselves were moving away from that configuration. From a business perspective, continuing to invest in a low-demand option no longer made sense.
At the same time, Chevrolet points to the performance advantages of its 8-speed dual-clutch transmission, which delivers faster and more precise gear changes than any manual setup could realistically achieve. This technology has become essential in extracting the full performance potential of modern Corvette models.
Still, the emotional connection remains a key part of the conversation. For many drivers, the appeal of a manual gearbox lies in the sense of control and engagement it offers, something that goes beyond raw numbers or lap times. That connection is difficult to replicate, even with the most advanced automatic systems.
Roma also addressed the appearance of a manual-converted Corvette at the SEMA show, describing it as misleading and noting that it created expectations that do not reflect the company’s direction.
As performance levels continue to rise across the Corvette range, particularly in high-output variants, the industry’s broader shift toward automation becomes increasingly evident. While the decision aligns with technical and market realities, it also highlights a growing divide between progress and tradition in the world of performance cars.
