The automotive world has been abuzz with discussions about a potential merger between Nissan and Honda. Although no formal announcement has been made, the rumors have drawn attention, including harsh criticism from former Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn. In an interview with Bloomberg, Ghosn reportedly described the potential alliance as a desperate and impractical move.
Ghosn’s Reservations on Synergy
The former CEO, who had led Nissan for over a decade and was instrumental in forming the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, reportedly expressed doubts about the merger’s feasibility. He is said to have pointed out that the two companies lack complementary qualities, operating in overlapping markets with similar products and brands. According to him, these redundancies would make achieving meaningful synergies challenging.
Concerns Over Government Influence
Carlos Ghosn also reportedly suggested that the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) might be playing a significant role in pushing the deal forward. He believed that the ministry prioritized control over industrial performance, possibly pressuring Honda into an arrangement that it might not have willingly embraced. Drawing on his years in Japan, Carlos Ghosn reportedly noted the ministry’s influence on such decisions and questioned whether the merger had genuine industrial logic.
He allegedly pointed out that while combining control and performance would be ideal, the METI appeared to focus solely on maintaining control, which he felt could hinder the alliance’s potential success.
A Critical Voice with a Complicated History
Ghosn’s remarks also come against the backdrop of his tumultuous history with Nissan. Once celebrated for transforming the company, his leadership ended in a controversial legal battle, including allegations of financial misconduct and his dramatic escape from Japan. Given the nature of his exit, observers believe his criticism may also be influenced by unresolved tensions with his former employer.
A Waiting Game for Nissan and Honda
Despite the criticism, Nissan and Honda have reportedly been collaborating on joint projects for months. In August, the two companies signed a memorandum of understanding to explore potential partnerships.
