The race to make electric cars as convenient as traditional ones just took a major leap forward in Dubai. Al-Futtaim, BYD’s official partner in the UAE, showcased its Megawatt Flash Charging system at Dubai Festival City — a breakthrough that promises to erase the long waits once associated with charging electric vehicles.

The numbers speak for themselves: this ultra-fast system can add up to two kilometers of driving range every single second, and an astonishing 400 kilometers in just five minutes. In other words, charging an EV could soon feel as quick and seamless as filling up with petrol.

Stella Li, BYD’s Executive Vice President, explained that the new technology isn’t just faster — it’s a game-changer. Built on BYD’s advanced Super e-Platform, it will power future models like the Han L and Tang L, which are already open for pre-orders.

What makes this innovation truly remarkable is the engineering behind it. The Megawatt Flash Charging stations are the world’s first liquid-cooled ultra-fast chargers, capable of delivering up to 1,360 kW of power. They can handle voltages of 1,000 volts and currents of 1,000 amps, with a 10C charging rate — a new benchmark for commercial EVs worldwide. With that kind of capability, BYD is setting a new global standard: the fastest charging experience yet.

For the UAE, this isn’t just about cutting-edge tech. It’s also about vision. Lucas Pilliod, General Manager of Al-Futtaim Electric Mobility, highlighted how the launch supports the country’s goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2050. He pointed out that recharging 400 kilometers in five minutes puts EVs on par with gasoline cars in terms of practicality — removing one of the last big hurdles to widespread adoption.

“This isn’t just faster charging,” Pilliod said. “It’s a decisive step toward a cleaner, smarter future of mobility.”

With Megawatt Flash Charging on the horizon, the UAE is once again proving it’s ready to lead the way into a sustainable tomorrow — one ultra-fast charge at a time.
