BMW Reveals the All-New 2027 X5 and the Fully Electric iX5

BMW is preparing to shake the luxury SUV world with the official debut of the all-new fifth-generation 2027 BMW X5, joined for the first time by a fully electric version carrying the name BMW iX5.

This is not a light update. It is the biggest design and engineering leap for the X5 since the original model arrived in 1999. The new generation adopts a daring look inspired by BMW’s futuristic Neue Klasse design language, while offering one of the widest powertrain lineups in the segment, including gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, fully electric, and hydrogen.

A New Exterior Identity With Wing Tabs and Double X Lighting

The all-new BMW X5 arrives with a sharper, cleaner, and more futuristic design than ever before. Its front end takes inspiration from the smaller iX3, with a boxy, mask-like appearance that gives the SUV a stronger and more modern presence.

At the front, the biggest highlight is the new Double X digital lighting signature. This setup blends the main headlights, turn signals, and daytime running lights into one clean visual element. Between them sits an illuminated kidney grille with a more balanced size, finally moving away from the oversized grilles that divided BMW fans in recent years.

From the side, BMW has made one of its boldest moves yet by removing traditional door handles completely. In their place are small integrated metal wing tabs mounted on the window pillars, opening at the touch of a button. The look is cleaner, more aerodynamic, and far more futuristic.

Wide wheel arches add muscle to the profile, while sporty wheels start at 21 inches as standard and go up to 23 inches.

At the rear, slim full-width LED taillights carry the same Double X identity, giving the SUV a lower and more athletic stance. The result is a luxury family SUV with a sharper, sportier character that will not make life easy for rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLE.

A High-Tech Luxury Cabin With Real Stone and Massive Screens

Inside, the 2027 BMW X5 combines high-end luxury with serious digital firepower.

The optional Clear and Bold package adds genuine Real Slate trim to the center console, paired with crystal glass controls for the audio system and gear selector. It is a cabin designed to feel premium, modern, and different from anything the X5 has offered before.

The dashboard is dominated by a massive 17.9-inch central touchscreen, supported by BMW Panoramic iDrive. This system stretches as a digital strip across the base of the windshield from door to door, creating a futuristic cockpit feel.

BMW also adds a 3D head-up display, while the front passenger can get an optional 14.6-inch entertainment screen for watching movies.

All models come standard with a huge 2.6-square-meter panoramic glass roof. Soft-closing doors are also included, with a fully automatic door-closing function available as an option.

BMW X5 Powertrain Options Between Gasoline and Hybrid

Despite its futuristic design, the fifth-generation X5 continues to use an updated version of BMW’s trusted CLAR platform, giving it the flexibility to offer several powertrain options.

BMW X5 40 Gasoline With Mild Hybrid

The X5 40 is powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six engine paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system.

It produces 394 horsepower and 580 Nm of torque, which is 19 horsepower more than the previous model. The SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds and is available with rear-wheel drive or xDrive all-wheel drive.

BMW X5 50e Plug-In Hybrid

The X5 50e combines the same inline-six engine with a powerful 194-horsepower electric motor.

Together, the system produces 483 horsepower and 700 Nm of torque, allowing the SUV to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds.

BMW has also increased battery capacity from 19.2 kWh to 26.5 kWh, raising the pure electric driving range to 71 km without burning a single drop of fuel.

The Real Star Is the Fully Electric BMW iX5 With 700 km of Range

The biggest surprise in this new generation is the arrival of the fully electric 2027 BMW iX5.

The iX5 60 AWD uses two electric motors and all-wheel drive to produce 570 horsepower and 804 Nm of torque. That is enough to launch this family SUV from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds.

The electric system comes with some seriously impressive numbers. A massive 144 kWh battery delivers an estimated driving range of up to 435 miles, or 700 km, on a single charge. This is achieved thanks to advanced high-density cylindrical battery cells, even though the SUV weighs more than 2,720 kg.

The iX5 also supports 800-volt DC fast charging at up to 460 kW. That means the battery can charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in only 22 minutes, while a 10-minute stop can add up to 274 km of range.

BMW has also equipped the iX5 with bidirectional charging, allowing it to power a home during an outage or even recharge another electric vehicle stranded on the road.

Official Global Prices for the 2027 BMW X5 and Electric iX5

All variants are now $1,500 more expensive than the previous generation. Global prices, including destination and delivery fees, are as follows:

BMW X5 40 RWD gasoline starts at $71,250, equivalent to around 267,200 Saudi riyals.

BMW X5 40 xDrive gasoline AWD starts at $73,550, equivalent to around 275,800 Saudi riyals.

BMW X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid starts at $78,950, equivalent to around 296,000 Saudi riyals.

BMW iX5 60 xDrive fully electric starts at $81,250, equivalent to around 304,700 Saudi riyals.

Launch and Production Timeline

The official rollout will begin with the gasoline-powered BMW X5 40 xDrive in global markets and on production lines in October 2026.

Rear-wheel-drive versions, the X5 50e plug-in hybrid, and the fully electric iX5 will follow in early 2027.

BMW also confirmed that high-performance versions powered by classic V8 engines, along with the advanced hydrogen-powered iX5 Hydrogen offering a 750 km range, will join the lineup later.
