BMW has recently announced a significant shift in its naming convention for petrol-powered vehicles, termed BMW ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) models: the letter “i” will no longer be used. This decision marks a move to simplify and update the nomenclature across BMW’s latest model lineup. Traditionally, the “i” at the end of model names such as 325i or 540i indicated that the cars were equipped with fuel injection, a feature that distinguished them from older models that used carburetors and merely featured a three-digit name highlighting the series and engine size.
This change reflects the evolution of automotive technology and branding. Carburetors have not been used in BMW’s petrol cars for many years, replaced entirely by fuel injection systems. Moreover, the “i” has taken on new significance with the introduction of BMW’s electric vehicle sub-brand, which includes popular models like the i3 and i8, and more recent additions such as the iX, i4, and iX3.
A BMW executive recently confirmed to BMWBlog that starting with the next generation of BMW ICE vehicles, this change will be implemented. For instance, the upcoming X3 will transition from the current M40i model to an X3 M50 version. Bernd Köber, Senior Vice President of BMW Brand and Product Management at Connected Company, emphasized that in the future, the “i” designation will exclusively signify an electric vehicle. This strategic change is intended to clarify the distinction between BMW’s petrol and electric offerings.
This renaming strategy not only addresses potential customer confusion—exemplified by the overlap between the fully electric i5 and the petrol-powered 540i, which is not a part of the 2024 5 Series lineup—but also aligns with BMW’s commitment to electric mobility. The use of the “i” in electric vehicle names makes it clear and straightforward, linking each electric model to its petrol counterpart and thereby simplifying consumer understanding.
The adoption of this naming convention for electric models, which corresponds directly with traditional series names (e.g., i5 for the 5 Series electric variant), is seen as one of the most logical and commendable among electric vehicle manufacturers. The sight of a BMW 330 without the familiar “330i” badge will undoubtedly be a notable change.
