BMW is preparing to introduce the next generation of the X5, and the first official teaser suggests the luxury SUV is heading into a much bolder design era.
The X5 has long been one of BMW’s most important SUV models, combining family practicality with the brand’s familiar premium driving character. Now, the upcoming 2027 version is set to mark the arrival of its fifth generation, bringing a fresh identity inspired by BMW’s new Neue Klasse design direction.
Before revealing the model in full, BMW shared a teaser on Instagram showing one of the most eye catching changes expected on the new SUV. The biggest surprise appears at the front, where the 2027 BMW X5 adopts X shaped headlights that immediately give the car a more futuristic and dramatic personality.
This new lighting signature is likely to divide opinions, especially among BMW fans who prefer the more traditional look of previous X5 generations. Still, it clearly shows that BMW wants the new model to stand out, not just as another luxury SUV, but as a clear step into the brand’s next design chapter.

Beyond the headlights, the front end also appears to feature more balanced kidney grilles positioned between parallel light elements. The result is a cleaner face with a strong illuminated presence, especially when viewed at night. It is a noticeable shift away from some of BMW’s more controversial oversized grille designs, while still keeping enough visual drama to make the new X5 instantly recognizable.
The design changes are not the only important updates expected. Reports suggest the 2027 BMW X5 will be offered with one of the broadest powertrain lineups in its class, including gasoline, diesel, plug in hybrid, fully electric, and even hydrogen powered versions.
This strategy could allow BMW to serve several different markets and customer needs with the same model family. Traditional engine options would appeal to long distance drivers, while the plug in hybrid and fully electric versions would target buyers looking for lower emissions and more advanced technology. The hydrogen variant, meanwhile, would show BMW’s continued interest in alternative clean mobility solutions.
For now, BMW has not revealed performance figures, battery details, driving range, or confirmed which markets will receive each drivetrain option. More information is expected when the 2027 BMW X5 makes its global debut on June 30.
