BMW Group has officially reached a major milestone in its electric journey, announcing the production of its two-millionth fully electric vehicle. But the most impressive part is not the number itself — it is the incredible speed at which the German automaker achieved it. While BMW needed nearly 11 years to build its first million EVs since launching the i3 in 2013, the second million arrived in just two years.
The rapid acceleration reflects a major shift in BMW’s strategy, although it also comes at a time when demand for electric vehicles is slowing in several key global markets, raising questions about how quickly the company can reach its third million EVs.
The Two-Millionth BMW EV
The vehicle carrying production number 2,000,000 was a BMW i5 M60 xDrive built in Germany and destined for a customer in Spain. The destination is no coincidence, as Europe has become the primary driver behind BMW’s EV growth.
Electric vehicle sales in Europe increased by 28% during 2025, while one out of every five cars sold in the European Union is now fully electric.
BMW’s Flexible Production Strategy
One of BMW’s biggest strengths is its flexible manufacturing strategy. Unlike many automakers, BMW produces electric and combustion-engine vehicles on the same production lines. This flexibility allows the company to react quickly to changing market conditions and helps maintain competitiveness despite global uncertainty.
Challenges In The US And China
Despite celebrating its second million EV milestone, BMW still faces challenges in major markets.
In the United States, EV sales dropped by 16.7% during 2025, while the final quarter saw a sharp 45.5% decline following the removal of federal tax incentives.
Meanwhile, the Chinese market also recorded a double-digit decline, negatively impacting BMW’s global performance.
On the other hand, plug-in hybrid vehicles continue gaining momentum. BMW reported a 30% increase in PHEV sales, suggesting many buyers still prefer hybrid solutions over fully electric vehicles.
Neue Klasse Will Shape BMW’s Future
BMW is now preparing a new generation of vehicles under its “Neue Klasse” strategy to maintain its momentum in the EV market.
The upcoming BMW iX3 will become the first Neue Klasse model to reach showrooms, followed by the next-generation electric BMW i3 expected to play a major role in BMW’s future lineup.
BMW is also preparing its first fully electric BMW X5, while Rolls-Royce — part of BMW Group — is developing a new electric SUV to join the Rolls-Royce Spectre.
Volkswagen Remains A Strong Rival
Despite BMW’s achievement, Volkswagen still leads in production speed. Volkswagen reportedly built its second million EVs just 10 months after reaching its first million milestone.
With future models such as the ID. Polo on the way, competition for EV sales leadership in Germany is expected to become even more intense.
ArabGT Opinion
BMW has proven that it can transition from being a traditional combustion-engine manufacturer into a serious electric vehicle company without losing its identity.
However, the third million EVs may become the real test. The question now is whether Neue Klasse models will convince skeptical buyers in China and the United States, or if hybrid vehicles will continue dominating the market for years to come.
