Audi Nuvolari Becomes the Most Powerful Production Car in Brand History

Nearly two years after Audi ended production of its legendary mid engine R8, and after repeatedly saying there would be no third generation, the German brand has delivered a major surprise.

Audi has not brought back the R8 name. Instead, it has revealed an all new supercar with a historic name from the 1930s. Say hello to the new Audi Nuvolari.

A True Successor to the R8

The car is named after legendary Italian racing driver Tazio Nuvolari, who made history with Auto Union, one of the brands that later became part of Audi’s story.

But this is not just a tribute car. Audi says the Nuvolari is the most powerful and fastest road legal production car it has ever built, with performance figures that place it in serious hypercar territory.

Lamborghini DNA, Audi Attitude

Audi has not officially linked the Nuvolari to the Lamborghini Temerario, the successor to the Huracán, but the connection is hard to ignore. After all, the old R8 shared plenty with the Gallardo and Huracán.

This time, however, Audi has added its own German flavor and pushed the formula even further.

The Nuvolari uses a plug in hybrid system built around a 4.0 liter twin turbo V6 that revs all the way to 10,000 rpm. It works with three advanced electric motors to produce a combined 987 horsepower.

The combustion engine alone delivers 789 horsepower and 730 Nm of torque, while Audi’s engineering upgrades give the Nuvolari an 80 horsepower advantage over the Lamborghini Temerario.

Supercar Numbers With Formula 1 Energy

The performance figures are wild enough to make this the fastest Audi ever.

It sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.6 seconds, reaches 200 km/h in 6.8 seconds, and keeps pulling beyond 350 km/h.

The hybrid system also includes a 7.3 kWh battery, allowing the car to drive short distances on electric power alone before the V6 wakes up.

Carbon Fiber, Active Aero, and DRS

Audi says it used lessons from Formula 1 while developing the Nuvolari. For the first time in the company’s history, the aluminum Audi Space Frame has been combined with a full carbon fiber reinforced body to reduce weight and improve performance.

The car also introduces several firsts for Audi, including forged center lock wheels and huge carbon ceramic brakes with 10 piston front calipers and 4 piston rear calipers.

At the back, an active rear wing works in three modes: closed, low downforce, and high downforce. Even more exciting, the driver gets a manual DRS button on the steering wheel, just like in Formula 1, to reduce drag on long straights in Track Mode.

Rare, Expensive, and Built for Collectors

The Audi Nuvolari arrives in a striking titanium inspired finish, with design touches influenced by the Concept C show car. Inside, Audi mixes modern digital screens with real physical buttons, giving the cabin a more premium and driver focused feel.

Production will be limited to just 499 units worldwide, with deliveries expected to begin in the first half of 2027.

As for the price, Audi says the Nuvolari will start from 600,000 euros in Germany, equal to around 645,000 US dollars.

So, has Audi finally given R8 fans the successor they deserve with this 987 horsepower hybrid monster, or would you still prefer the sound and soul of a naturally aspirated engine?
