A Shockwave in Stuttgart: Porsche Records Its Worst Sales Decline in 16 Years

The mood in Stuttgart was far from celebratory after Porsche released its global sales figures for 2025. The numbers told a difficult story, with the brand recording its steepest decline in sales in more than a decade and a half.

Global deliveries fell by 10 percent compared to the previous year, marking Porsche’s most significant downturn since the 2009 financial crisis. Rather than a routine annual report, the results reflected a brand navigating a rapidly changing market under mounting pressure.

China Leads the Decline as Europe Adds More Pressure

China delivered the biggest setback. Once Porsche’s most promising growth market, the region saw sales fall by 26 percent in 2025, following an already sharp 28 percent drop the year before. Growing competition from Chinese manufacturers—offering high-performance electric cars at significantly lower prices—combined with a slowdown in EV demand, has dramatically altered the market dynamics.

Europe offered little relief. Sales across the region declined by 13 percent, influenced in part by regulatory changes. Production of the gasoline-powered Macan was halted due to new cybersecurity regulations, while the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman reached the end of their production cycle in October, further limiting available volume.

Taycan Struggles While the 911 Remains Unshaken

A closer look at individual models reveals a clear contrast within Porsche’s lineup. The all-electric Taycan continued to struggle, with deliveries dropping by an additional 22 percent. The decline suggests that many buyers in the luxury performance segment are still hesitant to fully transition to electric drivetrains.

At the same time, the Porsche 911 once again proved its resilience. Sales of the iconic rear-engined sports car grew slightly, reaching 51,583 units and setting a new internal record. Despite shifting trends and new technologies, the 911 continues to anchor Porsche’s identity and appeal.

Macan remained the brand’s volume leader with 84,328 units sold, posting a modest increase of 1.9 percent. Cayenne deliveries fell sharply to 80,886 units, down 21.4 percent. The 911 recorded 51,583 units, up 1.3 percent. Sales of the 718 Boxster and Cayman dropped to 18,612 units, down 21.4 percent, while Taycan deliveries declined to 16,339 units, a 21.6 percent decrease. Panamera sales reached 27,701 units, down 6.4 percent year over year.

Rethinking the All-Electric Strategy

These results point to a period of reassessment for Porsche. While electrification remains central to the company’s long-term plans, the past year has shown that a fully electric push does not align evenly with customer expectations across all segments.

The continued strength of the 911, combined with the Macan’s ability to sustain demand despite major changes, sends a clear signal that customers value choice. In response, Porsche has begun placing greater emphasis on hybrid models and internal combustion engines, rather than accelerating exclusively toward battery-electric vehicles.

What Comes Next for Porsche

Porsche’s 2025 performance highlights the broader challenge facing premium performance brands today—balancing heritage, regulation, electrification, and evolving customer preferences. How the company adjusts its strategy over the coming years may prove decisive in preserving both its identity and its position in an increasingly competitive market.
