Ford may be preparing to take the Mustang in a direction few people would have expected a few years ago. According to new reports, the company is working on a four-door Mustang sedan that could arrive before the end of the decade, bringing more practicality to one of the most recognizable performance names in the industry.
The Wall Street Journal and Automotive News report that Ford recently showed dealers an early prototype during a private event. Executives reportedly said the car could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds while starting at less than $40,000.
Ford has not confirmed the final name, but the company has reportedly been referring to the project as the Mach 4. That would line up with a trademark Ford filed in early 2025.
A Very Different Kind Of Mustang
The idea of a four-door Mustang would be a major departure from the current formula. Today’s Mustang lineup offers several engine choices and both manual and automatic transmissions across much of the range, but every version still follows the familiar two-door layout.
A sedan would give Ford a direct answer to cars such as the Dodge Charger, which is available with both two and four doors. More importantly, it would give Ford a way back into a segment it largely abandoned several years ago.
Ford has not sold a traditional sedan in the United States since discontinuing the Fusion after the 2020 model year, choosing instead to focus heavily on SUVs, pickups, and crossovers. Even so, company executives have left the door open for sedans to return if the right product came along.
In June 2026, Ford Blue and Model e president Andrew Frick said a sedan could make sense if it were built around an existing nameplate. He also acknowledged that Ford was looking at ways to expand the Mustang family, making this reported four-door model feel less surprising in hindsight.
Current reports suggest the car could reach the market in either 2028 or 2029. The project is still far enough away that its specifications could change, but some interesting details are already beginning to emerge.
Two sources cited by the Wall Street Journal said the sedan is expected to use a hybrid powertrain, while one mentioned the possibility of a hybrid V8. Dealers who reportedly saw the prototype also described it as being similar in size and overall shape to the Porsche Panamera.
Ford executives allegedly went a step further, claiming the Mustang sedan would offer more rear legroom than the Panamera. That suggests the company is not simply adding two extra doors for appearance, but is genuinely trying to make the car more practical.
The Muscle Car Rivalry Could Return
The timing could also make things interesting for Ford’s traditional rivals. The Mustang has remained in continuous production since its debut in 1964, while both the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger have disappeared from their familiar forms.
Dodge effectively replaced the Challenger with its new Charger lineup, while Chevrolet is reportedly considering a return for the Camaro as a four-door sedan around 2029.
If both projects reach production, the old Mustang versus Camaro rivalry could return in a completely different format, this time with four doors and a much stronger focus on everyday usability.
Pricing could make the Ford particularly interesting. A starting figure below $40,000 would place the four-door Mustang toward the more affordable end of the broader Mustang family. A V8-powered version, if Ford actually offers one, would almost certainly cost more and could sit closer to the current Mustang GT, which starts at just under $50,000.
A four-door Mustang would certainly challenge the traditional image of the nameplate, but it could also give Ford something it currently lacks: a fast, relatively affordable sedan built around a name people already know. If the reports prove accurate, the Mustang may soon become much more than a two-door muscle car.
