A curious prototype: Yaris face, one seat only
Leaked images and official previews have shown a prototype unlike any other. At first glance, it looks unusual, sporting a front end nearly identical to the Yaris. Stranger still, the test mule has just a single driver’s seat, with the passenger space removed. The reason, however, is purely practical: engineers needed room for the hybrid’s new battery pack.
As odd as it may appear, this illustrates Toyota’s determination to evolve the Aygo X into a car capable of meeting Europe’s strict upcoming Euro 7 emissions standards—a clear sign of how serious the brand is about the future of urban mobility.
Why the Yaris face?
To fit the hybrid system properly, Toyota had to stretch the Aygo X’s body by around 76 mm. This extension required adopting readily available components from the Yaris, including the headlights, grille, and bumper, creating a unique mix of Aygo proportions with Yaris styling cues.
Originally, the prototype’s battery was placed in the front passenger seat, but as development advanced, engineers relocated it beneath the rear seats and trunk—keeping storage space reasonable at 231 liters.
Borrowed technology from the Yaris
Under the hood, the Aygo X Hybrid is expected to share the same setup as the Yaris and Yaris Cross: a 1.5-liter three-cylinder petrol engine paired with an electric motor and compact battery. The system allows short-distance driving in pure EV mode and delivers impressive efficiency when switching between petrol and electric power.
