Mercedes-Benz is preparing a significant update for the 2026 S-Class while simultaneously expanding the sedan’s role in autonomous mobility through a new Level 4 robotaxi program launched in Abu Dhabi. Together, these developments reflect the brand’s parallel strategies: maintaining its flagship model’s competitiveness and leveraging the S-Class platform for large-scale autonomous applications.
Updates Coming With the 2026 S-Class Facelift
More than five years after the introduction of the current W223 generation, Mercedes is finalizing a mid-cycle facelift expected to debut soon. Early images reveal revised headlights with a star-pattern signature and updated taillights likely adopting similar motifs. Prototype vehicles also show a roof-mounted LiDAR system and additional sensors, though these are intended solely for autonomous test units and will not appear on customer vehicles.
Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius has described this facelift as requiring greater investment than usual, though full technical specifications remain undisclosed. The V12 engine is expected to continue in the Maybach variant, despite increasingly strict emissions regulations.
Inside the cabin, Mercedes appears to be maintaining its screen-heavy direction rather than returning to more physical controls. The updated model is expected to adopt a layout similar to the EQS, with multiple displays integrated beneath a single glass surface. This direction aligns with recent comments from design chief Gorden Wagener, who indicated that large displays remain a priority for the brand.
S-Class Platform Used for Level 4 Robotaxi Service in Abu Dhabi
While preparing the facelifted retail model, Mercedes is also deploying the S-Class as part of a new driverless taxi program in Abu Dhabi. The Emirati company Lumo has launched a fleet of Mercedes S-Class vehicles equipped with Level 4 autonomous driving technology supplied by Momenta, a Chinese artificial intelligence firm. This collaboration positions the S-Class as the basis for what is described as the first scalable robotaxi service built on a mass-produced luxury vehicle platform.
Commercial operations in Abu Dhabi are scheduled to begin in 2026, with expansion to additional international markets planned afterward. The emirate has already started issuing Level 4 permits to multiple operators, making it one of the first regions globally — and the first in the Middle East — to authorize commercial deployment at this capability level.
Long-Term Transition Toward a Unified S-Class Line
In parallel with these developments, Mercedes has confirmed that the S-Class and EQS will merge into a single product family with the next generation (W224). The EQS name will be discontinued, with future electric flagships marketed as S-Class models incorporating EQ technology.
The next-generation design will move away from the current EQS’s aerodynamic silhouette in favor of a more traditional S-Class profile. Early indications suggest influences from the Vision Iconic concept. The model is expected to launch near the end of the decade, around 2029–2030.
Positioning the S-Class for Its Next Phase
Both the upcoming facelift and the autonomous deployment underscore Mercedes’ effort to retain the S-Class’s relevance in two distinct areas: luxury retail and emerging mobility services. The facelift aims to keep the model competitive against rivals such as the BMW 7 Series, while the Abu Dhabi robotaxi initiative demonstrates how the S-Class architecture can adapt to new commercial and technological roles.
