2026 Polestar 3 Launches with 680 Horsepower and Ultra-Fast Charging

2026 Polestar 3 Launches with 680 Horsepower and Ultra-Fast Charging

The Polestar 3 hasn’t been on the road for long, but already it’s getting a serious upgrade for 2026. Faster charging, stronger performance, and a brainier computer headline the changes — and thankfully, that last one will be offered as a free retrofit for existing owners.

Polestar’s CEO, Michael Lohscheller, went as far as to say the upgrades make it feel “like an entirely new car.” That might be stretching things a bit, but the shift from a 400-volt to an 800-volt electrical system is no small update. For now, the revamped Polestar 3 will launch in Europe first, with U.S. timing to follow once the current 2025 models roll out of the brand’s South Carolina factory.

Charging Time Shrinks, Range Shuffles

Charging speed is one of the big stories here. The outgoing 400-volt Polestar 3 managed 250 kW DC fast charging, which was respectable. The 2026 version, however, pushes things to 350 kW for dual-motor trims and 320 kW for single-motor ones. That trims the 10–80% charge time to just 22 minutes — about 8 minutes quicker than before.

New CATL batteries also debut: a 92 kWh pack for the rear-wheel-drive version and a 106 kWh unit for dual-motor cars, both slightly smaller than the old 111 kWh setup. Polestar claims efficiency gains of up to 6%, but the range story is mixed. The single-motor model now sits at 375 miles WLTP (down from 439), the standard dual-motor comes in at 394 miles (barely changed), and the dual-motor Performance actually improves to 368 miles, up from 352.

More Horsepower, Less Torque — and Quicker Acceleration

Every version of the 3 now benefits from a new in-house permanent-magnet rear motor, paired with an asynchronous front motor that can disengage when not needed to save energy. Polestar has also reworked steering feel, added stiffer anti-roll bars, and shifted power bias further to the rear, all in the name of making the SUV sharper to drive.

The numbers tell an interesting story: horsepower climbs across the board, torque drops slightly, yet acceleration improves.

  • Single-motor RWD: 333 hp, 354 lb-ft, 0–60 mph in 6.3 seconds (down from 7.5s).
  • Dual-motor AWD: 544 hp, 546 lb-ft, 0–60 mph in 4.5 seconds (0.3s quicker).
  • Performance model: 680 hp, 642 lb-ft, 0–60 mph in 3.8 seconds (compared to 4.5s before).

A Much Smarter SUV

If there’s one upgrade every owner will notice, it’s the brain transplant. The 2026 Polestar 3 now runs on dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin processors, jumping from 30 to 254 trillion operations per second. That means faster reactions from safety systems, smarter energy management, and more potential for driver-assistance features. Best of all, this hardware will be installed free of charge for current Polestar 3 owners starting in early 2026.

Subtle Touches Inside and Out

Alongside the big hardware changes, Polestar has fine-tuned the details. Active air suspension is now standard on the Performance and optional on dual-motor trims. A new Prime package bundles most options, while the Bowers & Wilkins audio system adds headrest speakers and road-noise cancellation. The base interior now uses Charcoal MicroTech with recycled aluminum trim.

Design changes are subtle: a new Storm gray paint option, slightly larger door graphics, and a Performance badge on the nose.

Rolling Out in Europe First

The refreshed Polestar 3 will debut in the UK, where demand is especially strong, before reaching other European markets. U.S. specifications and pricing are expected sometime in 2026, once production of the current model wraps up.
