Toyota has introduced the 2025 Toyota GR86 with several updates to its affordable sports car. Engineers have fine-tuned the shock absorbers and electric power steering to improve the handling of this rear-wheel-drive coupe. For models equipped with a manual transmission, the updated engine torque control makes rev-matching smoother and easier. Additionally, adjustments to the throttle control have made the accelerator pedal more responsive.
A new Hakone Special Edition trim has been added to the lineup, featuring a distinctive green paint job, bronze 18-inch wheels, Brembo brakes, and Sachs shock absorbers. Inside, this edition boasts exclusive black and tan upholstery. Toyota plans to produce only 850 units of this special edition, which will be available for purchase in the fall. Pricing details will be released later in the year.
Japan will also receive a version of this trim called the Ridge Green Limited edition, with a production run limited to 200 units exclusively for its home market.
For those who prefer an automatic transmission, the 2025 GR86 offers a more engaging driving experience. Toyota has expanded the engine-speed tolerance range during downshifting and widened the torque band to provide more readily available power. Additionally, the 2025 model includes new daytime running lights and a tire pressure warning system for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) model.
Toyota is already accepting orders in Japan for the updated 2025 Toyota GR86 ahead of its launch on August 1. However, due to expected high demand for the Ridge Green Limited, Toyota is implementing a lottery system. Enthusiasts can register their interest at dedicated GR Garage locations until July 28. Those selected through the lottery will be able to purchase the special edition but will have to wait until October for delivery.
The base model GR86 starts at 3,518,000 yen, which is approximately $22,120 at current exchange rates. The Ridge Green Limited is priced higher, at 3,897,000 yen ($24,500) for the manual version and 3,995,000 yen ($25,100) for the automatic.
Some images show the 2025 Toyota GR86 with steel wheels, which are part of the cup car designed for a specific racing series. This model competes against the equivalent Subaru BRZ cup car, which was updated earlier this year.
