The 2025 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 features an immensely powerful V8 engine, considered the most robust of its kind ever built in the U.S. This 5.5-liter engine, enhanced by a twin turbo, generates 1,064 horsepower at 7,000 rpm. Initially, Chevrolet estimated its top speed to be 215 mph (346 km/h), but recent testing has proven that the car is capable of even greater speeds.
During trials conducted at the ATP Automotive Testing Center’s high-speed oval track in Papenburg, Germany, Chevrolet exceeded its predicted speed with GM President Mark Reuss behind the wheel, accompanied by an engineer in the passenger seat.

The Corvette ZR1 reached an impressive 375 km/h (233 mph) in sixth gear during the tests, breaking the top speed record for any major American automaker and for any car priced under $1 million. This achievement wasn’t limited to a single instance; Chevrolet reported that five engineers managed to surpass 370 km/h (230 mph) during the same test session.
Chris Barber, the Corvette ZR1’s chief development engineer, remarked that the car’s stability made it feel as though it was simply cruising on a highway, despite the extreme speeds, which he found astonishing.
Details of the car that achieved the record-breaking speed
The Corvette ZR1 used for the test did not rely on specialized track modifications. It was equipped with a standard chassis, a typical aerodynamics package including a regular rear wing, carbon-fiber ground effects, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, and aluminum wheels. Additionally, the car was placed in a speed mode, which adjusted the chassis control system to handle high-speed racing conditions.
The test was conducted on a 7.6-mile (12.2-km) high-speed oval track with a bank of approximately 50 degrees, which is notably steeper than Talladega’s 33-degree incline.
Barber, one of the engineers who had the opportunity to drive the Corvette ZR1 on this unique track, commented that entering the bank was an unparalleled experience, describing it as something that forces drivers into the ground. He noted that even on NASCAR tracks, drivers don’t encounter such a steep bank, making this experience highly unusual.
