2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe: A New Era for the Compact Sedan

The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe marks the debut of the second generation of this subcompact luxury sedan. Known for its compact design, sporty styling, and improved powertrain, the 2 Series Gran Coupe aims to solidify its place in BMW’s lineup with a refreshed exterior and interior. Set to hit the U.S. market in March 2025, this model introduces more powerful engine options and modern features, starting at $40,775 for the front-wheel-drive model and $42,775 for the all-wheel-drive version.

Design Updates and Exterior Features
The new 2 Series Gran Coupe aligns itself with BMW’s larger models, featuring sportier styling that draws comparisons to the redesigned 5 Series. This compact sedan has grown slightly, with a 0.7-inch increase in length and a 1-inch increase in height, now standing at 179.2 inches long and 56.9 inches tall. Despite its increased size, the wheelbase remains at 105.1 inches, and the width is unchanged at 70.9 inches.

BMW’s signature design elements, including the illuminated kidney grille (available later in 2025) and pronounced Hofmeister kink, add to the vehicle’s refreshed look. The rear has been redesigned to be boxier, with the sportier M235 variant featuring quad tailpipes. The car now comes standard with M Sport styling, offering larger intakes and more aggressive exterior details. Buyers can also choose between 18- and 19-inch wheel options wrapped in all-season or high-performance summer tires.

Powertrain and Performance Enhancements
Under the hood, the 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. In the 228 variants (sDrive and xDrive), this engine delivers 241 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque, a notable improvement from the previous generation’s output. The M235 xDrive variant ups the ante with 312 horsepower, though its torque has been slightly reduced to 295 lb-ft, down from 332 lb-ft in the 2024 model.

BMW has replaced the eight-speed automatic transmission with a new seven-speed dual-clutch system, enhancing the car’s acceleration and responsiveness. The M Sport Package further enhances performance with a Boost function that optimizes the car’s settings for maximum acceleration, activated by holding the left paddle shifter. The 228 xDrive now achieves a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds, while the M235 xDrive reaches the same speed in just 4.7 seconds.

Chassis and Suspension Improvements
BMW has also worked on improving the handling and ride comfort of the 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe. The chassis benefits from increased body rigidity, new suspension components, and a 20 percent increase in caster offset at the front. The standard adaptive suspension offers a balance between comfort and agility, while a traditional suspension setup is also available at no extra cost. The M Sport models feature larger 15.2-inch front brake rotors and a more advanced braking system that integrates brake actuation and control into one module for enhanced performance.

Interior and Technology Upgrades
Inside, the 2025 2 Series Gran Coupe is equipped with BMW’s latest technology. A 10.7-inch touchscreen is paired with a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster, all housed within a single glass panel, running BMW’s OS 9 and offering features like wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other standard features include a 12-speaker Harmon/Kardon sound system, wireless phone charging, keyless entry, and heated sport seats.

BMW has also upgraded the interior materials, offering leather-free options such as perforated Veganza and Alcantara, though leather is still available on the M Sport steering wheel. The Premium Package introduces additional features like a massaging front seat with lumbar support, a gloss black roof option, and backlit interior trim.

Safety and Driver Assistance Features
The 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe comes equipped with a suite of safety features, including Frontal Collision Mitigation, Lane Keeping Assistant, and Active Blind Spot Detection. For an additional cost, buyers can opt for the Driving Assistance Plus Package, which includes Distance Control and Steering Assistant, and the Driving Assistance Professional Package that adds Side Collision Protection and Traffic Jam Assistant, which allows for limited hands-free driving at speeds up to 40 mph on select highways.

Pricing and Availability
BMW plans to start production of the 2025 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe later this year, with the first models reaching dealerships in March 2025. The all-wheel-drive 228 xDrive will start at $42,775, while the M235 xDrive will be priced at $50,675. The front-wheel-drive 228 sDrive model, which is expected to arrive in mid-2025, will start at $40,775.
